This project was great fun to work on!
Blackwater Brewhouse are an offshoot of the Maldon Brewing Company who I have been involved with for a long time throughout various projects.
Everything you see branded for Blackwater Brewhouse has been designed by the Digital Moose.
We started with the logo, then moved on to all branding materials for a brewery – pump clips, keg labels, bottle labels – even a custom stamp.
The brief for the logo was that it needed to appeal to a younger audience than Maldon Brewing Co.’s traditional drinkers. Mike – Director of Maldon Brewing Co – didn’t want it to be too heavily linked to Maldon. However, we needed a theme & so Mike & I settled on Vikings – who have an infamous association with Maldon. The logo is loosely based on the Viking invaders from the famous ‘Battle of Maldon‘ poem.
The artwork itself was hand drawn by Sophie (of the Crafty Moose), and of course put together by myself. The circular lettering surrounding the viking represents a beer barrel, and the full logo features the axes for a bit of added flair.
Printed Materials
For each beer, we would potentially need a whole set of printed materials. Bottle labels and pump clips being the most widely used. The design took shape based on the limitations on sizes of pump clips – we wanted it to be as big as possible, with big bold fonts to make it stand out in a raft of beer taps on a bar.
In keeping with the theme of the brand, everything needed to be in “Dark mode” with designs that stand out on a black background. Everything also needed to feature the logo to keep that brand recognition.
The first beer to be produced was called “Panta Pale Ale”. Panta being the original name for the river Blackwater – so naturally featured some waves to represent the river!
I’m super happy with how pump clips and bottle labels have turned out. They’re very pleasing to look at!
I also produce all the social media graphics and images for the Blackwater Brewhouse accounts. Again, we stick to a ‘dark mode’ theme, using a slate type background behind each graphic. I particularly like the latest one for Griotte, and how the graphics spill over from the pump clip onto the background.
